Judg 10

10:1 After the time of Abimelech a man of Issachar, Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.

10:2 He led Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.

10:3 He was followed by Jair of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years.

10:4 He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys. They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair.

10:5 When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.

10:6 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the LORD and no longer served him,

10:7 he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,

10:8 who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.

10:9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was in great distress.

10:10 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”

10:11 The LORD replied, “When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,

10:12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?

10:13 But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.

10:14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!”

10:15 But the Israelites said to the LORD, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.”

10:16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer.

10:17 When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.

10:18 The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever will launch the attack against the Ammonites will be the head of all those living in Gilead.”

10:1 And after Abimelech Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, rose up to save Israel; and he dwelt in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.

10:2 And he judged Israel twenty-three years, and he died and was buried in Shamir.

10:3 And after him Jair the Gileadite rose up and judged Israel twenty-two years.

10:4 And he had thirty sons, who rode on thirty donkeys; and they had thirty cities (they are called Havvoth-jair to this day), which were in the land of Gilead.

10:5 And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.

10:6 Then the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah. And they served the Baals and the Ashtaroth and the gods of Aram and the gods of Sidon and the gods of Moab and the gods of the children of Ammon and the gods of the Philistines, and they forsook Jehovah and did not serve Him.

10:7 And the anger of Jehovah burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the children of Ammon.

10:8 And they oppressed and crushed the children of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the children of Israel who were across the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.

10:9 And the children of Ammon crossed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah and Benjamin and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was greatly distressed.

10:10 Then the children of Israel cried out to Jehovah, saying, We have sinned against You, for we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.

10:11 And Jehovah said to the children of Israel, Did I not save you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites and from the children of Ammon and from the Philistines?

10:12 And the Sidonians and Amalek and Maon oppressed you; and you cried out to Me, and I saved you from their hand.

10:13 But you forsook Me and served other gods; therefore I will not save you again.

10:14 Go and cry out to the gods that you have chosen. Let them save you in the time of your distress.

10:15 But the children of Israel said to Jehovah, We have sinned. You do with us according to all that is good in Your sight. Only deliver us this day, we pray.

10:16 And they removed the foreign gods from their midst and served Jehovah. And His soul could no longer bear Israel s misery.

10:17 Then the children of Ammon gathered together and encamped in Gilead, and the children of Israel assembled together and encamped in Mizpah.

10:18 And the people, that is, the princes of Gilead, said each to his companion, Who is the man who will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
