Gen 50

50:1 Joseph threw himself upon his father and wept over him and kissed him.

50:2 Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him,

50:3 taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.

50:4 When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court, “If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him,

50:5 ‘My father made me swear an oath and said, “I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’”

50:6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.”

50:7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh’s officials accompanied him–the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt–

50:8 besides all the members of Joseph’s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father’s household. Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen.

50:9 Chariots and horsemen also went up with him. It was a very large company.

50:10 When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father.

50:11 When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.” That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.

50:12 So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them:

50:13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite, along with the field.

50:14 After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.

50:15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”

50:16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions before he died:

50:17 ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.

50:18 His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said.

50:19 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?

50:20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

50:21 So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

50:22 Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years

50:23 and saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.

50:24 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

50:25 And Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.”

50:26 So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

50:1 Then Joseph fell upon his father s face and wept over him and kissed him.

50:2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.

50:3 And forty days were spent for this, for this is the time to be spent for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.

50:4 And when the days of weeping for him had passed, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, If I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh, saying,

50:5 My father made me swear, saying, Now I am about to die; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me. Now therefore please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.

50:6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear.

50:7 And Joseph went up to bury his father; and all the servants of Pharaoh went up with him, the elders of his house and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

50:8 And all the house of Joseph and his brothers and his father s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen.

50:9 And chariots also went up with him, as well as horsemen; and it was a very great company.

50:10 And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lamented there with a very great and grievous lamentation; and he observed seven days of mourning for his father.

50:11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians. Therefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

50:12 And thus his sons did to him as he commanded them;

50:13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought with the field for a possession of a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.

50:14 And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned into Egypt, he and his brothers and all who went up with him to bury his father.

50:15 And when Joseph s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, What if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the evil which we did to him?

50:16 And they sent a message to Joseph, saying, Your father charged before he died, saying,

50:17 Thus shall you say to Joseph, Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong. So now please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father. And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

50:18 And his brothers also went and fell down before him and said, We are here as your servants.

50:19 And Joseph said to them, Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God?

50:20 Even though you intended evil against me, God intended it for good, to do as it is this day, to preserve alive a numerous people.

50:21 Now therefore do not be afraid; I will sustain you and your little ones. And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

50:22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father s household; and Joseph lived one hundred ten years.

50:23 And Joseph saw Ephraim s children of the third generation; the children of Machir the son of Manasseh were also born on Joseph s knees.

50:24 And Joseph said to his brothers, I am about to die, but God will surely visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

50:25 And Joseph made the children of Israel swear, saying, God will surely visit you, and you shall bring my bones up from here.

50:26 And Joseph died, being one hundred ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
