14:1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him.
14:2 “But not during the Feast,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
14:3 While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.
14:4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume?
14:5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
14:6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
14:7 The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.
14:8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.
14:9 I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
14:10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.
14:11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
14:12 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
14:13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.
14:14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
14:15 He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
14:16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
14:17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
14:18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me–one who is eating with me.”
14:19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely not I?”
14:20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.
14:21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
14:22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
14:23 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it.
14:24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them.
14:25 “I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.”
14:26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
14:27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
14:28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
14:29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
14:30 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “today–yes, tonight–before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”
14:31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
14:32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
14:33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
14:34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
14:35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.
14:36 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
14:37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?
14:38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
14:39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.
14:40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
14:41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
14:42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
14:43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
14:44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”
14:45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.
14:46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
14:47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
14:48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?
14:49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
14:50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.
14:51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him,
14:52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
14:53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders and teachers of the law came together.
14:54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
14:55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.
14:56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
14:57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:
14:58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.’”
14:59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
14:60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”
14:61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”
14:62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
14:63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked.
14:64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.
14:65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
14:66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.
14:67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. “You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.
14:68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.
14:69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.”
14:70 Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
14:71 He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”
14:72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
14:1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were two days away. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking a way to seize Him by craftiness and kill Him,
14:2 For they said, Not at the feast, lest there be a tumult by the people.
14:3 And while He was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as He reclined at table, a woman came, having an alabaster flask of ointment, of very costly pure nard, and she broke the alabaster flask and poured it over His head.
14:4 But there were some who were indignantly commenting among themselves: Why has this waste of the ointment been made?
14:5 For this ointment could have been sold for over three hundred denarii and given to the poor. And they were infuriated with her.
14:6 But Jesus said, Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a noble deed on Me.
14:7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you do not always have Me.
14:8 She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.
14:9 And truly I say to you, Wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done shall also be told as a memorial of her.
14:10 And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests to deliver Him up to them.
14:11 And when they heard this, they rejoiced and promised to give him money. And he sought a way to deliver Him up opportunely.
14:12 And on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the passover, His disciples said to Him, Where do You want us to go and prepare so that You may eat the passover?
14:13 And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him;
14:14 And wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, The Teacher says, Where is My guest room, where I may eat the passover with My disciples?
14:15 And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. And there prepare for us.
14:16 And the disciples went out and came into the city and found it even as He had told them, and they prepared the passover.
14:17 And when evening fell, He came with the twelve.
14:18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me, one who is eating with Me.
14:19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, Surely not I?
14:20 And He said to them, It will be one of the twelve, one who dips with Me in the dish.
14:21 For the Son of Man is going away, even as it is written concerning Him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.
14:22 And as they were eating, He took bread and blessed it, and He broke it and gave it to them, and said, Take; this is My body.
14:23 And He took a cup and gave thanks, and He gave it to them; and they all drank of it.
14:24 And He said to them, This is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for many.
14:25 Truly I say to you, I shall by no means drink of the product of the vine anymore until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
14:26 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
14:27 And Jesus said to them, You will all be stumbled, because it is written, “I will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.”
14:28 But after I have been raised, I will go before you into Galilee.
14:29 But Peter said to Him, Even if all will be stumbled, yet I will not!
14:30 And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you that today in this night, before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.
14:31 But he went on speaking more intensely, Even if I must die with You, I will by no means deny You! And they all said similarly.
14:32 And they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He said to His disciples, Sit here while I pray.
14:33 And He took Peter and James and John with Him and began to be awestruck and deeply distressed.
14:34 And He said to them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.
14:35 And going forward a little, He fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour would pass from Him.
14:36 And He said, Abba Father, all things are possible to You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.
14:37 And He came and found them sleeping. And He said to Peter, Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to watch for one hour?
14:38 Watch and pray that you may not come into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
14:39 And going away again, He prayed, saying the same thing.
14:40 And coming again, He found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy. And they did not know what to answer Him.
14:41 And He came the third time and said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough. The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being delivered into the hands of sinners.
14:42 Arise, let us be going. Behold, the one betraying Me has drawn near.
14:43 And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, appeared, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
14:44 Now the one who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, Whomever I kiss, He is the one. Seize Him and lead Him away securely.
14:45 And when he came, he immediately approached Him and said, Rabbi! and kissed Him affectionately.
14:46 And they laid hands on Him and seized Him.
14:47 But a certain one of those standing by drew his sword and struck the slave of the high priest, and took off his ear.
14:48 And Jesus answered and said to them, Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to arrest Me?
14:49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. But may the Scriptures be fulfilled.
14:50 And they all left Him and fled.
14:51 And a certain young man was accompanying Him, clothed with a linen cloth over his naked body; and they seized him.
14:52 But he left the linen cloth behind and fled naked.
14:53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together.
14:54 And Peter followed Him at a distance until he was within the courtyard of the high priest. And he was there sitting with the attendants and warming himself in the light of the fire.
14:55 Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death, and they could not find it.
14:56 For many gave false testimony against Him, yet the testimonies were not consistent.
14:57 And some stood up and testified falsely against Him, saying,
14:58 We heard Him say, I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.
14:59 And neither in this regard was their testimony consistent.
14:60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and questioned Jesus, saying, Do You not answer anything? What is this that these testify against You?
14:61 But He was silent and did not answer anything. Again the high priest questioned Him and said to Him, Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
14:62 And Jesus said, I am. And you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.
14:63 And the high priest, tearing his garments, said, What further need do we have of witnesses?
14:64 You heard the blasphemy! How does it appear to you? And they all condemned Him as being worthy of death.
14:65 And some began to spit at Him and to blindfold His face and to beat Him with their fists and to say to Him, Prophesy! And the attendants, slapping Him about, took Him.
14:66 And while Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came,
14:67 And seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.
14:68 But he denied it, saying, I neither know nor understand what you are talking about. And he went outside into the forecourt, and a rooster crowed.
14:69 And the servant girl, seeing him, began again to say to those standing by, This man is one of them!
14:70 But again he denied it. And after a little while, those standing by again said to Peter, Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean as well.
14:71 But he began to curse and to swear, I do not know this man of whom you speak!
14:72 And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered the word, how Jesus had said to him, Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times. And thinking upon it, he wept.
