10:1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.
10:2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.
10:3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”
10:4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.
10:5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.
10:6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
10:7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.
10:8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.
10:9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.
10:10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
10:11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.
10:12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air.
10:13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”
10:14 “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”
10:15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
10:16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.
10:17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate.
10:18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.
10:19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you.
10:20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”
10:21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”
10:22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.”
10:23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along.
10:24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.
10:25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.
10:26 But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”
10:27 Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.
10:28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.
10:29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”
10:30 Cornelius answered: “Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me
10:31 and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.
10:32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’
10:33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”
10:34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism
10:35 but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.
10:36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.
10:37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached–
10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
10:39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree,
10:40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.
10:41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen–by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
10:42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.
10:43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
10:45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.
10:46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,
10:47 “Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”
10:48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
10:1 Now there was in Caesarea a certain man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort,
10:2 Devout and one who feared God with all his household, giving many alms to the people and beseeching God continually.
10:3 He saw clearly in a vision around the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him and saying to him, Cornelius.
10:4 And he looked intently at him and became terrified and said, What is it, Lord? And he said to him, Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.
10:5 And now send men to Joppa and send for a certain Simon, who is surnamed Peter;
10:6 This man is lodging with a certain Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.
10:7 And when the angel who was speaking to him went away, he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier of those who waited on him;
10:8 And relating all things to them, he sent them to Joppa.
10:9 And on the next day as they were journeying and drawing near to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray around the sixth hour.
10:10 And he became very hungry and wanted to eat. And while they were preparing, a trance came upon him;
10:11 And he beheld heaven opened, and a certain vessel like a great sheet descending, being let down by four corners onto the earth,
10:12 In which were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth and birds of heaven.
10:13 And a voice came to him: Rise up, Peter; slay and eat!
10:14 But Peter said, By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything common and unclean.
10:15 And a voice came to him again a second time: The things that God has cleansed, do not make common.
10:16 And this occurred three times; and immediately the vessel was taken up into heaven.
10:17 Now as Peter was utterly perplexed in himself as to what the vision which he had seen might be, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made diligent inquiry for Simon s house, stood at the gate.
10:18 And they called out and inquired whether Simon, who is surnamed Peter, was lodging there.
10:19 And while Peter was pondering over the vision, the Spirit said to him, Behold, there are three men seeking you.
10:20 But rise up, go down and go with them, doubting nothing, because I have sent them.
10:21 And Peter went down to the men and said, Behold, I am he whom you seek; what is the cause for which you have come?
10:22 And they said, Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man and one who fears God and is well attested to by the whole nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear words from you.
10:23 So he called them in and lodged them. And on the next day he rose up and went away with them; and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
10:24 And on the next day they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius was awaiting them, having called together his relatives and intimate friends.
10:25 And when Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and falling at his feet, worshipped him.
10:26 But Peter raised him up, saying, Rise up; I myself am also a man.
10:27 And as he talked with him, he entered and found many who had come together.
10:28 And he said to them, You understand that it is unlawful for a man who is a Jew to join himself to or come near one of another race; yet God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
10:29 Hence, even without objection I came when I had been sent for. I ask therefore, For what reason have you sent for me?
10:30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago to this hour I was praying at the ninth hour in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
10:31 And he said, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God.
10:32 Send therefore to Joppa and call for Simon, who is surnamed Peter; this man is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.
10:33 Therefore I sent men at once to you, and you have done nobly in coming. Now therefore we all are present before God to hear all the things that have been commanded to you by the Lord.
10:34 And opening his mouth, Peter said, In truth I perceive that God is not a respecter of persons,
10:35 But in every nation he who fears Him and works righteousness is acceptable to Him.
10:36 The word which He sent to the sons of Israel in announcing the gospel of peace through Jesus Christ (this One is Lord of all)
10:37 You yourselves know, the word which has been spoken throughout the whole of Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John proclaimed:
10:38 Jesus, the One from Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all those who were being oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
10:39 And we are witnesses of all the things which He did, both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom also they did away with by hanging Him on a tree.
10:40 This One, God raised on the third day; and He has made Him manifest,
10:41 Not to all the people, but to witnesses appointed beforehand by God, to us, ones who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.
10:42 And He has charged us to proclaim to the people and solemnly testify that this is the One who was designated by God to be the Judge of the living and the dead.
10:43 To this One all the prophets testify that through His name everyone who believes into Him will receive forgiveness of sins.
10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those hearing the word.
10:45 And the believers who were of the circumcision, as many as had accompanied Peter, were amazed, because on the Gentiles also the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out;
10:46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,
10:47 Can anyone forbid the water so that these would not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit even as we?
10:48 And he charged them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.
