19:1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
19:2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.
19:3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd.
19:4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
19:5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”
19:6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
19:7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a ‘sinner.’”
19:8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
19:9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.
19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”
19:11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
19:12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return.
19:13 So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’
19:14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’
19:15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.
19:16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’
19:17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’
19:18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’
19:19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’
19:20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth.
19:21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’
19:22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?
19:23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’
19:24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
19:25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
19:26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.
19:27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them–bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”
19:28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
19:29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them,
19:30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
19:31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
19:32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.
19:33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
19:34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
19:35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.
19:36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
19:37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
19:38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
19:39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
19:40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
19:41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it
19:42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace–but now it is hidden from your eyes.
19:43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.
19:44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
19:45 Then he entered the temple area and began driving out those who were selling.
19:46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
19:47 Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.
19:48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
19:1 And He entered and was passing through Jericho.
19:2 And behold, there was a man whose name was called Zaccheus; and he was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.
19:3 And he was seeking to see Jesus, who He was, and could not because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.
19:4 And he ran on ahead and climbed up in a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way.
19:5 And as He came to the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay in your house.
19:6 And he hurried and came down, and received Him, rejoicing.
19:7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, He has gone in to lodge with a sinful man.
19:8 And Zaccheus stood and said to the Lord, Behold, the half of my possessions, Lord, I give to the poor, and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore four times as much.
19:9 And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham.
19:10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which is lost.
19:11 And as they were listening to these things, He spoke further a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
19:12 He said therefore, A certain man of noble birth went to a distant country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.
19:13 And he called ten of his own slaves and gave them ten minas, and he said to them, Do business until I come.
19:14 But his citizens hated him and sent an envoy after him, saying, We do not want this man to reign over us.
19:15 And when he came back, having received the kingdom, he commanded that those slaves to whom he had given the money should be called to him so that he might know what they had gained by doing business.
19:16 And the first appeared, saying, Master, your mina has gained ten minas.
19:17 And he said to him, Well done, good slave. Because you have become faithful in the least, have authority over ten cities.
19:18 And the second came, saying, Your mina, master, has made five minas.
19:19 And he said to this one as well, And you, be over five cities.
19:20 And the other came, saying, Master, behold your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief;
19:21 For I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man: you withdraw what you did not deposit, and you reap what you did not sow.
19:22 He said to him, Out of your mouth I will judge you, wicked slave. You knew that I am a harsh man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow.
19:23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and when I came, I would have collected it with interest?
19:24 And to those standing by he said, Take the mina away from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.
19:25 And they said to him, Master, he has ten minas.
19:26 I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from him who does not have, even that which he has shall be taken away.
19:27 However, these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.
19:28 And having said these things, He went on before them, going up to Jerusalem.
19:29 And as He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount which is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples,
19:30 Saying, Go into the village opposite you, in which, as you are entering, you will find a colt tied, on which no man has ever yet sat; untie it and lead it here.
19:31 And if anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? thus shall you say, Because the Lord has need of it.
19:32 And those who were sent went away and found it even as He had told them.
19:33 And as they were untying the colt, its masters said to them, Why are you untying the colt?
19:34 And they said, Because the Lord has need of it.
19:35 And they brought it to Jesus. And when they had thrown their garments on the colt, they put Jesus on it.
19:36 And as He went, they spread their own garments in the road.
19:37 And as He was already drawing near to the descent of the Mount of Olives, all the multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the works of power which they had seen,
19:38 Saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!
19:39 And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Him, Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.
19:40 And He answered and said, I tell you, If these shall be silent, the stones will cry out.
19:41 And as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it,
19:42 Saying, If you knew in this day, even you, the things that are for your peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.
19:43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a rampart before you, and will encircle you, and will press you in on every side,
19:44 And they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave a stone upon a stone in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.
19:45 And He entered into the temple and began to cast out those who were selling,
19:46 Saying to them, It is written, And My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of robbers.
19:47 And He taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him;
19:48 Yet they could not find anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging upon Him, listening.
