8:1 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said,
8:2 “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.
8:3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
8:4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
8:5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.
8:6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people, and they did so.
8:7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.
8:8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
8:9 About four thousand men were present. And having sent them away,
8:10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
8:11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.
8:12 He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it.”
8:13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
8:14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.
8:15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
8:16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
8:17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
8:18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?
8:19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied.
8:20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” They answered, “Seven.”
8:21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
8:22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
8:23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
8:24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
8:25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
8:26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t go into the village.”
8:27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
8:28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
8:29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”
8:30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
8:31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.
8:32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
8:33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
8:34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
8:35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.
8:36 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?
8:37 Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
8:38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
8:1 In those days, since there was again a great crowd and they did not have anything to eat, He called the disciples to Him and said to them,
8:2 I am moved with compassion for the crowd, because for three days now they have remained with Me and they do not have anything to eat.
8:3 And if I send them away to their home hungry, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a distance.
8:4 And His disciples answered Him, Where will anyone be able to get enough to satisfy these people with bread here in this desolate place?
8:5 And He asked them, How many loaves do you have? And they said, Seven.
8:6 And He charged the crowd to recline on the ground. And taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and gave them to His disciples to set before them, and they set them before the crowd.
8:7 And they had a few small fish, and having blessed them, He said that these also should be set before them.
8:8 And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the surplus of broken pieces, seven baskets.
8:9 And there were about four thousand people. And He sent them away.
8:10 And immediately He got into the boat with His disciples and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.
8:11 And the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven and tempting Him.
8:12 And He groaned deeply in His spirit and said, Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly I tell you, No sign shall be given to this generation.
8:13 And leaving them, He again got into a boat and went away to the other side.
8:14 And they forgot to take bread, and except for one loaf, they did not have any with them in the boat.
8:15 And He charged them, saying, Watch! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.
8:16 And they reasoned with one another, saying, It is because we do not have bread.
8:17 And Jesus, knowing it, said to them, Why are you reasoning because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Do you have your heart hardened?
8:18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?
8:19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many handbaskets full of broken pieces did you take up? They said to Him, Twelve.
8:20 And when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets filled with broken pieces did you take up? And they said, Seven.
8:21 And He said to them, Do you not yet understand?
8:22 And they came to Bethsaida. And they brought to Him a blind man and entreated Him to touch him.
8:23 And He took hold of the hand of the blind man and led him forth outside the village. And He spat on his eyes and laid His hands on him and asked him, Do you see anything?
8:24 And he looked up and said, I see men, for I see them as trees, walking.
8:25 Then again He laid His hands upon his eyes, and the man looked intently and was restored, and he began to see all things clearly.
8:26 And He sent him to his house, saying, Do not even enter into the village.
8:27 And Jesus and His disciples went out into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, Who do men say that I am?
8:28 And they told Him, saying, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.
8:29 And He questioned them, But you, who do you say that I am? Peter answered and said to Him, You are the Christ!
8:30 And He charged them not to tell anyone concerning Him.
8:31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and after three days rise.
8:32 And He spoke this word openly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.
8:33 But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.
8:34 And He called the crowd to Him with His disciples and said to them, If anyone wants to follow after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.
8:35 For whoever wants to save his soul-life shall lose it; but whoever will lose his soul-life for My sake and the gospel’s shall save it.
8:36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul-life?
8:37 For what could a man give in exchange for his soul-life?
8:38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.
