14:1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
14:2 and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
14:3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
14:4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
14:5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered him a prophet.
14:6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much
14:7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
14:8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
14:9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted
14:10 and had John beheaded in the prison.
14:11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
14:12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
14:13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
14:14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
14:15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
14:16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
14:17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
14:18 “Bring them here to me,” he said.
14:19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
14:20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
14:21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
14:22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
14:23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
14:24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
14:25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
14:26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
14:27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
14:28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
14:29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
14:30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
14:31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
14:32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
14:33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
14:34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
14:35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him
14:36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
14:1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,
14:2 And he said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and because of this these works of power are operating through him.
14:3 For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother.
14:4 For John had been saying to him, It is not lawful for you to have her.
14:5 And though he desired to kill him, he feared the crowd because they held him as a prophet.
14:6 But when Herod s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst and pleased Herod;
14:7 Hence, he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
14:8 And she, being instigated by her mother, said, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
14:9 And the king was grieved, yet because of the oaths and those reclining at table with him, he commanded it to be given.
14:10 And he sent men and beheaded John in the prison.
14:11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
14:12 And his disciples came and took the corpse and buried it; and they came and reported the matter to Jesus.
14:13 And when Jesus heard this, He withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place privately. And when the crowds heard of it, they followed Him on foot from the cities.
14:14 And going forth, He saw a great crowd, and He was moved with compassion for them and healed their sick.
14:15 Now when evening fell, the disciples came to Him, saying, This place is deserted and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.
14:16 But Jesus said to them, They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.
14:17 And they said to Him, We do not have anything here except five loaves and two fish.
14:18 And He said, Bring them here to Me.
14:19 And after commanding the crowds to recline on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds.
14:20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve handbaskets full.
14:21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, apart from women and children.
14:22 And immediately He compelled the disciples to step into the boat and to go before Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away.
14:23 And after He sent the crowds away, He went up to the mountain privately to pray. And when night fell, He was there alone.
14:24 Now the boat was already in the midst of the sea, being battered by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.
14:26 And the disciples, seeing Him walking on the sea, were startled, saying, It is a ghost! And they cried out for fear.
14:27 But immediately Jesus talked to them, saying, Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid.
14:28 And Peter answered Him and said, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.
14:29 And He said, Come. And Peter, coming down from the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
14:30 But seeing the strong wind, he became frightened; and as he began to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me!
14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him and said to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt?
14:32 And when they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
14:33 And those who were in the boat worshipped Him, saying, Truly You are the Son of God.
14:34 And they crossed over and came to land at Gennesaret.
14:35 And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding region and brought to Him all who were ill.
14:36 And they begged Him that they might only touch the fringe of His garment. And as many as touched were completely healed.
