Mt 13

13:1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake.

13:2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore.

13:3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed.

13:4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

13:5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.

13:6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.

13:7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.

13:8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop–a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

13:9 He who has ears, let him hear.”

13:10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

13:11 He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

13:12 Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.

13:13 This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

13:14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.

13:15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’

13:16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.

13:17 For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

13:18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:

13:19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

13:20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.

13:21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

13:22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

13:23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

13:24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.

13:25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.

13:26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

13:27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

13:28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

13:29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them.

13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”

13:31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.

13:32 Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.”

13:33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

13:34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.

13:35 So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”

13:36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”

13:37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.

13:38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,

13:39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.

13:40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.

13:41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.

13:42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13:43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

13:44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

13:45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.

13:46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

13:47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish.

13:48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.

13:49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous

13:50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13:51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked. “Yes,” they replied.

13:52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

13:53 When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.

13:54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked.

13:55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?

13:56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”

13:57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor.”

13:58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

13:1 On that day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea.

13:2 And great crowds were gathered to Him, so that He stepped into a boat and sat, and all the crowd stood on the shore.

13:3 And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went out to sow.

13:4 And as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the way, and the birds came and devoured them.

13:5 And others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much earth, and immediately they sprang up because they had no depth of earth.

13:6 But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered.

13:7 And others fell on the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them.

13:8 But others fell on the good earth and yielded fruit, one a hundredfold, and one sixtyfold, and one thirtyfold.

13:9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

13:10 And the disciples came and said to Him, Why do You speak in parables to them?

13:11 And He answered and said to them, Because to you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it has not been given.

13:12 For whoever has, it shall be given to him, and he will abound; but whoever does not have, even that which he has shall be taken away from him.

13:13 For this reason I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

13:14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, In hearing you shall hear and by no means understand, and seeing you shall see and by no means perceive.

13:15 For the heart of this people has become fat, and with their ears they have heard heavily, and their eyes they have closed, lest they perceive with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart, and they turn around, and I will heal them.

13:16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.

13:17 For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men have desired to perceive the things that you see, and have not perceived them, and to hear the things that you hear, and have not heard them.

13:18 You therefore hear the parable of the one who sowed.

13:19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand, the evil one comes and snatches away that which has been sown in his heart. This is the one sown beside the way.

13:20 And the one sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;

13:21 Yet he does not have root in himself but lasts only for a time, and when affliction or persecution occurs because of the word, immediately he is stumbled.

13:22 And the one sown in the thorns, this is he who hears the word, and the anxiety of the age and the deceitfulness of riches utterly choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

13:23 But the one sown on the good earth, this is he who hears the word and understands, who by all means bears fruit and produces, one a hundredfold, and one sixtyfold, and one thirtyfold.

13:24 Another parable He set before them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has become like a man sowing good seed in his field.

13:25 But while the men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares in the midst of the wheat and went away.

13:26 And when the blade sprouted and produced fruit, then the tares appeared also.

13:27 And the slaves of the master of the house came and said to him, Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where then did the tares come from?

13:28 And he said to them, An enemy has done this. And the slaves said to him, Do you want us then to go and collect them?

13:29 But he said, No, lest while collecting the tares, you uproot the wheat along with them.

13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Collect first the tares and bind them into bundles to burn them up, but the wheat gather into my barn.

13:31 Another parable He set before them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field,

13:32 And which is smaller than all the seeds; but when it has grown, it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and roost in its branches.

13:33 Another parable He spoke to them: The kingdom of the heavens is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until the whole was leavened.

13:34 All these things Jesus spoke in parables to the crowds, and apart from a parable He spoke nothing to them,

13:35 So that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.

13:36 Then, leaving the crowds, He went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, Make the parable of the tares of the field clear to us.

13:37 And He answered and said, He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man;

13:38 And the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil one;

13:39 And the enemy who sowed them is the devil; and the harvest is the consummation of the age; and the reapers are angels.

13:40 Therefore just as the tares are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the consummation of the age.

13:41 The Son of Man will send His angels, and they will collect out of His kingdom all the stumbling blocks and those who practice lawlessness,

13:42 And will cast them into the furnace of fire. In that place there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

13:43 Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

13:44 The kingdom of the heavens is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid, and in his joy goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.

13:45 Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a merchant seeking fine pearls;

13:46 And finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

13:47 Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a net cast into the sea and gathering from every species,

13:48 Which, when it was filled, they brought onto the shore, and sat down and collected the good into vessels; but the foul they cast out.

13:49 So it will be at the consummation of the age: the angels will go forth and separate the evil from the midst of the righteous,

13:50 And will cast them into the furnace of fire. In that place there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

13:51 Have you understood all these things? They said to Him, Yes.

13:52 And He said to them, For this reason every scribe discipled to the kingdom of the heavens is like a householder who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.

13:53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there.

13:54 And He came into His own country and taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said, Where did this man get this wisdom and these works of power?

13:55 Is not this the carpenter s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

13:56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?

13:57 And they were stumbled because of Him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.

13:58 And He did not do many works of power there because of their unbelief.
